Project Runway Canada 2 winner opens LG Fashion Week with Capsule Collection

October 15, 2009

Fresh from garnering industry acclaim, Project Runway Canada Season 2 champion Sunny Fong will take center-stage at the The Art Gallery of Ontario's (AGO) Walker's Court at 4pm on October 19th 2009. The event is unmistakably the most anticipated show of LG Fashion Week and Fong's first collection since winning the hit show earlier this year.

The afternoon presentation will be the re-launch of his label VAWK and showcase Fong's capsule collection for Spring/Summer 2010 titled TATTO HIBISCUS.

"The VAWK Spring/Summer 2010 collection was inspired by French Polynesia," says Fong. "In my research for the collection, I came across the film ‘Mutiny on the Bounty' (the 1935 Oscar winning version with Clark Gable) so I loosely based the story of my collection on the film."

The name of the collection reflects Fong's inspiration. "In Polynesian culture, tattoos (spelled Tatto in Tahitian) are signs of beauty. Tropical hibiscus flowers, traditionally worn behind the left ear, symbolize that someone is immersed in their culture," explains Fong. "Both traditions are motifs that I'm using in the collection and the theme of becoming part of Polynesian culture."

As natural light fills the Frank Gehry-designed Walker's Court, Fong will share a romantic tale of a voyage to paradise through his sophisticated, feminine, and masterfully-tailored collection. The show will be the first time that Walker's Court has been transformed into a fashion runway.

This collection also debuts VAWK's exciting collaboration with business partner/model agent Ben Barry of Ben Barry Agency. "My passion for entrepreneurship and breaking barriers in the fashion industry found a perfect fit with the avant-garde mindset of Sunny," says Barry. "I'm honoured to lend my support and expertise to such a brilliant, creative force who is sure to change the runways of the world."

The mood is guaranteed to reach a hi-pitch outside the doors of the AGO on Monday, as VAWK fans are invited to line up for a coveted first-come-first-serve standing spot. 200 of Canada's top fashion media and celebrity VIPs will view the collection from an intimate view point on the show floor.

For armchair fashionistas, VAWK has launched a micro site where fans can watch the making of the collection. At 4pm on Monday October 9th, TATTO HIBISCUS will be streamed live, a first, for a fashion week in Canada.

VAWK is grateful to the generous support of the show sponsors: Winners, The AGO, Freshii, L'Oreal Paris, 9th Sphere, Rosalie Sharp, and the Fashion Design Council of Canada.
